I'm
grateful to all the individuals who contributed to the making of
this webpage.
Doy las gracias especialmente a la gente de
Morenci who agreed to be interviewed. It was their generation who
made it possible for my generation to go out into the world and
accomplish what we have. They survived the Depression and World
War II. They passed on their values and strengths; they helped to
shape us. Hearing their stories first hand was a privilege and a
dream come true for me.
Thanks also to their families who made it possible
for me to interview them. Their gracious hospitality made it seem
like we were back in Morenci.
Special thanks also go to Christine Marin, Curator/Archivist
of the Chicano Research Collection at Arizona State University and
tambien a Tucson author Patricia Preciado Martin. Chris has been
of invaluable assistance to me throughout my writing career. With
this project she was my historian/scholar. She guided and helped
me to develop methods and guidelines to bring alive the stories,
images, narratives, and histories of la gente de Morenci. As always,
she made available the pertinent photographs, ephemera, and historical
documents at the archives. Patricia's sharing of her experiences
with collecting oral histories was helpful.
I am grateful to Jan Monk, executive director
of SIROW (Southwest Institute for Research on Women) at the University
of Arizona for believing in my project and in me and for giving
me her support and sponsorship to acquire the grant. Thanks also
go to Penny Waterstone and Jo Ann Troutman for their help in preparing
the grant.
Muchisimas gracias to mis comadres, Roni Rivera-Ashford,
Irma Lopez, and Rosi Andrade who reviewed the website as I created
the individual pages. They provided important assistance by trying
out the links, editing the text, and just being there for me throughout
the entire process.
My husband, Kurt Björkquist was invaluable.
He scanned photos, took pictures, and drove us to all the interviews.
I could not have completed this project without his help.
