The
Morenci Phelps Dodge Mercantile Store was built
by the Detroit Copper Company in 1901. Constructed
of steel and local stone, it was first known as
the DC Store. Its north wall and basement were made
of limestone. The rest of it was built from red
granite quarried in Morenci Canyon. It was said
to be the finest department store in Arizona in
the early 1900's.
