This
photo of Metcalf High School in Santa Rosa Canyon was taken
after all the other town buildings were gone. The school
was built in 1916 and abandoned three years later when Metcalf
mines closed due to the depressed copper market. It was
used as an elementary school until the late 1930's when
the last families left Metcalf. A scrap dealer bought the
school for $1000 and tore it down. (courtesy
