Metcalf

Metcalf in the early 1920's. The large light-colored building on the left is the Metcalf High School. A trestle on the Shannon Railroad crosses Santa Rosa Canyon in the center of town. Arizona Copper Company sold all its holdings in the area to Phelps Dodge Corporation in 1921. In 1930 there were only about 500 people living in Metcalf.

Shannon Incline

The Shannon Incline was a spectacularly steep incline located northeast of Metcalf. It rose out of the east side of Chase Creek Canyon and led to the mines of the Shannon Copper Company. It was the steepest incline in the area.
