Childhood

"My closest friends around Metcalf were my next door neighbors, one was Edujenio Rivas. The only games that we played there were baseball, basketball, and go up the inclines. We'd go up there and then come down, riding that rail. Put cardboard on the rails. We'd slide down to the bottom of the rail. We'd ride the Coronado and the King inclines."

Teenage Years

"I was around fourteen when I started dating. We usually went around there into the theater in Morenci. That was the only place for dates. We would take the girl in there and we'd look at whatever they were showing. That's about the only place that we'd go. No chaperones at all. The Americanos went to the same theater. I didn't date any gringas. Not at all. Because at that time we wanted to go out with a Chicana. (laughter) Which I did. I had grown up there in the little towns and I admired Chicanas.

My favorite movies were cowboys. I forgot the name of the theater in Morenci. I listened to the radio. At that time most everybody started buying radios. We bought one. We used to listen to the radio. My favorite music was the violin and guitar. I liked Mexican music, mostly rancheras, pura rancheria. It's the same now.

The only thing there around Morenci was the sports. We would play in the school grounds. We had dances. The dances were at the school gymnasium. The Imperio was built later on in years, after the depression."
